Recebi um e-mail da Rosa Pomar do A ervilha cor de rosa: " Não posso deixar de partilhar esta curiosidade consigo. É uma imagem brasileira do século XIX. Repare no saco do rapaz junto do balcão :)". A sacola do rapaz é um taleigo! Reparem que ele está numa padaria (Boutique de boulanger). Debret, gente! Todos sabemos da importância de Debret para o conhecimento dos costumes da corte brasileira da Colônia e do Primeiro Reinado. Suas gravuras são uma crônica visual importantíssima do período em que viveu aqui no Brasil. Ele viveu aqui desde 1816 até 1831. Isso quer dizer que chegou oito anos depois da vinda da corte portuguesa e ficou até o ano em que D.Pedro I abdicou e foi para Portugal para ser D.Pedro IV.
Quando voltou à França, ele publicou o "Viagem Pitoresca e Histórica ao Brasil". A palavra "pitoresca", aqui, tem o sentido de 'digno de ser pintado, de figurar num quadro'.
Com um dos outros significados de "pitoresco", o de 'que diverte, divertido, recreativo', quero citar o musical de Miguel Falabella e Josimar Carneiro, Império , em que a personagem de Debret é o narrador, e o samba-enredo concorrente de uma das escolas-de-samba para o Carnaval de 2009, que diz: "Debret pintou o Rio colonial/ Missão francesa que acendeu/O fino gosto pelo glamour europeu/ Grandes artistas, novo ideal!".
Tudo isso aí por causa da gravura (que pode ser vista aqui) enviada pela Rosa Pomar.

I got an e-mail from Rosa Pomar, from A ervilha cor de rosa: “I must share this piece of information with you. It’s a 19th century Brazilian image. Take notice of the sack the man near the counter has got in his hands :).” The sack is a taleigo! Notice he is at some sort of baker’s (Boutique de boulanger, in French). It’s a Debret, folks! We Brazilians know of Debret’s importance concerning the knowledge about the habits of the Brazilian court during the periods known as Colonia (Colony) and Primeiro Reinado (First Reign). His drawings and paintings are visual chronicles of the period he lived here in Brazil. He lived here from 1816 to 1831, and that means he arrived here eight years after the Portuguese court's arrival and stayed until the year in which D. Pedro I abdicated of his throne and left to Portugal in order to become D. Pedro IV.
When Debret went back to France, he published a book called “A Picturesque and Historical Journey to Brazil”. The word “picturesque”, here, means “worth being painted or being in a picture”.
The other meaning of the word “picturesque”, that is, “something that amuses”, reminds me of a Brazilian musical by Miguel Falabella and Josimar Carneiro, Imperio (Empire), in which Debret is one of the characters – the narrator –, and also of the samba-song sang by one of the 2009 competing Schools of Samba in Rio de Janeiro.
